ERICEIRA: A LOCAL GUIDE FROM PORTUGAL’S SURF CAPITAL

Ericeira is a fishing town that never quite stopped being one. Whitewashed houses, cobbled streets that run downhill to the water, boats still working out of the harbour, and eight beaches inside a few kilometres of coast.

In 2011 it became the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe — a stretch of roughly four kilometres holding some of the most consistent waves in the Atlantic. That is what brought the surfers. The bakeries, the bars, the skatepark and the sunsets are what made a lot of them stay.

This is our guide to the town: where we eat, where we drink, where we send people when they ask. It is not sponsored and nobody has paid to be on it. If somewhere is listed, we go there.

WHERE WE TEACH: PRAIA DE SÃO JULIÃO

Ericeira’s reputation is built on reef. Coxos, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Pedra Branca — fast, heavy, unforgiving, and the reason the town became the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe. They are extraordinary waves. They are also no place to stand up for the first time.

So we teach fifteen minutes south, at Praia de São Julião.

It is a wide sandy bay backed by dunes, sitting just outside the southern edge of the reserve, and it is one of the few beaches on this coast with enough room to make a fool of yourself in private. The whitewater runs a long way. The bottom is sand — which matters, because for the first hour the wave is going to put you on it, repeatedly.

That is the whole argument, and we would rather make it plainly than dress it up. Beginners should learn on sand. Almost everything else about a surf lesson is negotiable; that part is not.

GETTING THERE

Fifteen minutes from the centre of Ericeira by car, south along the EM 546. There is parking beside the beach, and it fills up on summer weekends.

If you are booked with us, none of that is your problem. Transfers are included from anywhere you are staying in the Ericeira area—we pick you up and drive you back afterwards.

WHEN IT WORKS

São Julião has waves most days of the year. Spring and autumn are the kindest months to learn — smaller, cleaner, quieter, and warmer than people expect. Summer brings more consistency and more company.

From November to March the Atlantic gets serious. That is the season that made the reefs famous, and it is why we run those months on enquiry rather than on a fixed timetable — we would rather put you in the right window than sell you the wrong one.

It stays uncrowded whatever the month — only eight schools are licensed to teach at São Julião, and we are one of them.

IF YOU ALREADY SURF

São Julião is a beach break, and it behaves like one: shifting peaks, decent lefts and rights on a clean day, and nothing that will punish a mistake badly. It is a good place to put in volume. If you want the reefs, they are fifteen minutes back up the road, and we are happy to tell you which one to paddle out at and when — ask us, rather than guessing from a forecast app.

SINTRA

Sintra sits in the foothills of the Serra de Sintra, a short drive inland from the coast, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Palaces on every hilltop, mist in the trees, and more Gothic folly per square kilometre than anywhere else in Portugal.

Must-See Attractions in Sintra:

Pena Palace: the one on the postcards. Red and yellow, Gothic, Renaissance and Moorish all at once, with the Atlantic on the horizon.

Quinta da Regaleira: a Gothic mansion with tunnels running beneath it and the Initiation Well, a spiral staircase sunk deep into the ground. Alchemy, Freemasonry and the Knights Templar, written into the stonework.

Moorish Castle (Castelo dos Mouros): an eighth-century Moorish fortress along the ridge. Walk the walls; the view is the point.

Sintra National Palace (Palácio Nacional de Sintra): in the middle of town, recognisable by its two enormous chimneys. Manueline, Gothic, and Moorish, it has been a royal residence for centuries.

Monserrate Palace: the quiet one. Neo-Gothic, Indian and Moorish in a single building, surrounded by botanical gardens full of rare species.

Go early. By midday in summer, the coaches own the hill.

Praia de São Julião, where we teach, sits at the northern edge of the Sintra municipality — the same coastline, fifteen minutes from Ericeira.
