THE CURIOUS ORIGIN OF ERICEIRA: WHERE THE NAME COMES FROM
If you've ever strolled through the sun-kissed streets of Ericeira, soaked up the surf vibes, or just wondered how to pronounce it (hint: it's "Eh-ree-say-rah"), you might have found yourself asking: "Where does that unique name come from?" Well, you're in for a treat—because the story is as charming as the town itself!
All together now: "Eh-ree-say-rah"
A VILLAGE WITH A NAME STEEPED IN LEGEND
Ericeira isn't just famous for its waves and pastel de nata. Its name has a backstory that goes way back, think ancient times, before surfboards and wetsuits were even a concept.
The most popular explanation? It all comes down to… sea urchins! Yes, those spiky little creatures you sometimes spot in tide pools. The word "ouriço" means "sea urchin" in Portuguese, and "Ericeira" is thought to have evolved from "Ouriceira," or "land of sea urchins." According to local legend, the coastline here was once so thick with sea urchins that the early settlers couldn't help but name the place after them. (Source: Visit Portugal, Ericeira Surf Guide)
BUT WAIT—THERE'S MORE!
Some historians suggest that the name could also have roots in the word "ouriço-caixeiro," meaning "hedgehog." So, depending on who you ask, Ericeira might just be the "land of hedgehogs" instead. Either way, it's a name that's all about spiky, adorable creatures, whether they live on land or in the sea.
A NAME THAT STUCK
Over the centuries, "Ouriceira" gradually morphed into "Ericeira." The "ou" became "e," and the name rolled off the tongue a bit easier. Today, Ericeira is renowned worldwide as a surfing hotspot, a seafood lover's paradise, and one of Portugal's most picturesque coastal towns. But if you look closely, you'll still spot nods to its spiky origins, check out the sea urchin motifs around town!
SPIKED BY A SEA URCHIN? HERE'S HOW TO DEAL WITHOUT LOSING YOUR COOL (OR YOUR FOOT)
Ah, the sea urchin, the ocean’s little mood-killer in a spiky suit. One moment you’re cruising barefoot, loving life, and the next… zap! A purple pin cushion has punked you.
If one of these grumpy little sea mines gets you, here’s how to handle it without wiping out:
- Stay chill. It’ll sting like a wipeout on reef, but panicking won’t help. Breathe, you legend.
- Get outta the water and check your foot. Those spines are sneaky—thin, brittle, and not big on leaving quietly.
- Soak it in hot water (as hot as you can handle, but not so hot that it's scalding). This helps break down any venom and reduces the pain.
- Tweeze what you can, gently. If the spines are deep or hidden, don’t go full surgeon—get it checked by a doctor.
- Please clean it with an antiseptic and keep it covered while it heals.
Tip: if you are surfing a reef break, boots might not be sexy, but neither is limping down the beach like a wounded pirate. Respect the sea, even its grumpy bits.

TAKE ONE HOME (PAIN FREE)
Uni Ouriço is a beautifully hand‑crafted wooden sea urchin made in Ericeira, Portugal. Each one is made entirely by hand, with 365 holes drilled individually into the base, then spikes inserted one by one—no machinery, no shortcuts. The tip of each spike is burned to a darker tone, giving the piece depth and texture that evokes the real sea urchin’s aesthetic.
Because the process is 100% manual—wood selected by hand, holes drilled, spikes placed, each burned by hand—no two Unis are alike. That uniqueness is at the core of the concept: each Uni is singular, just like its name implies in both Japanese and mathematical terms, from “uni” meaning one, unique, original.
With its tasteful design and symbolic 365‑spike structure (“one urchin, 365 picos – a story for every day”), Uni Ouriço is sold in several shops across Ericeira and can also be bought online via the official site. It makes a memorable way to take home a piece of Ericeira (and Portugal), a decorative object that carries both local meaning and creative spirit.
